How technology can help seniors stay independent and safe
In the USA alone, there are an estimated 40.3 million people over the age of 65, according to the 2010 US Census Bureau. An average adult in the US has a life expectancy of 78 years, and as this continues to increase, so does the need for technology to enable this section of the population to live a safe and independent life.
There are some fantastic companies providing devices, advice and technology support to seniors across the US. Here are some of our top picks.
Tech Support for Seniors
As part of our Focus on Women in Tech feature, we were lucky enough to be able to speak to Hayden Baca, CEO and Founder of UnSavvy Strategy. Hayden created her company to help and support seniors with all their technology needs, from internet advice, fixing a phone or contacting their internet provider on their behalf.

The company first began in 2004 and now help seniors across New York City. OATS has been successful in funding and in 2018, have raised $3 million which they have used to expand their services into Texas and Colorado.
Smart Home Devices
As people grow older, they often want the ability to stay in their own home for longer, to retain their independence and dignity. HandsFree Health have created a smart home device to help seniors by answering health questions, health insurance policy information and medication reminders.
In addition, they also have a compatible smart watch, that means the user can alert family members and emergency response teams for added safety.
Wearable Devices
We featured the CEO of UnaliWear as part of our Focus on Women in tech series, where Jean explained to us her inspiration for the product. Jean describes how her mother was the inspiration and the motivation behind creating the device, and how the device now means that seniors can stay in the home they love for longer.
