We are working alongside our partner in Devon to find a consultant of Psychiatry community post for Torbay. The post is to lead the care of 16-65 year olds, serving a large area in Torbay. The Tust has worked closely with commissioners to redesign the service and alongside the LDU unit has divided into 3 teams which are now broadly similar in size based on GP catchment areas. This is an established post and is currently vacant due to the incumbent consultant moving to another part of the country.

The trust works with its partners to provide supported accommodation, vocational rehabilitation and employment opportunities to help people learn skills, get back to work and move towards living independently.

We provide a wide range of mental health and learning disability services, including those for:

  • Adults with mental health needs
  • Older people with mental health needs, including the Bristol Dementia Wellbeing Service
  • People with a learning disability
  • Children and young people with mental health and learning disability needs (from 1 April 2019)
  • People who need a secure environment.


The vast majority of our services are provided in the community, but we also have a range of inpatient (hospital) services for people who need a spell of more intensive care and support.


£84,559 – £114,003 dependant on experience and qualification. The trust has suggested that is open to specialist areas of interest that could help to supplement this.


Torquay is a beautiful seaside town in Devon, known for beaches cliffs and coastline it has been nicknamed the English Riviera due to its remarkably warm climate with a record temperature of 31.5C. Home to one of Britain’s most important stone age sites, the birthplace of Agatha Christie and currently the home of a number of film companies. Given that it has been a tourist town for long there are some excellent restaurants and bars. Torquay has good transport links, with a train a train to London clocking in at around 3 hours.


Essential Requirements:

  • Full and Specialist Registration with GMC
  • CCT or equivalent
  • Teaching experience of undergraduates
  • Evidence of ability to exercise leadership in a multi-disciplinary team.

Your Role

The job plan is currently made up of 10Pas over 5 days. 7,5 for DDC and 2.5 for SPA as per Royal College guidelines. Timetables are only indicative; the formal plan is to be agreed between the Medical Director and the applicant. For a copy of the timetable get in touch and we will be happy to provide it.

It is within the LDU of the Adult Clinical Directorate. It is a post for a General Adult Consultant Psychiatrist for patients aged 16-65 years old (16-18 out of fulltime education) serving a large urban community in Torbay. The Trust has worked closely with the commissioners to redesign the service and the recently formed Adult LDU for Torbay is divided into three teams of a broadly equitable population size based on GP catchment areas.

The post holder will be currently based at the Health and Wellbeing Clinic, within the Paignton area, where private office space with PC accessibility and IT support is available and appropriate secretarial support will be provided.

They will offer assessment, diagnosis and treatment of patients being managed by the two teams, as well as other expert clinical services in support of patients and their families/carers as judged necessary.

Another two Consultant psychiatrists provide similar services within Torbay in two other CMHTs.

The post holder will be part of a trust wide Section 12 Approved Doctor rota during which the post holder will not be responsible for routine clinical duties within his catchment area but will make him/herself available to undertake Mental Health Act assessment work within the South of the County.

The team currently consists of full time Clinical Team Leader, mental health nurses, Occupational Therapists, social workers and Support Time and Recovery workers. All 3 Community Mental Health Teams in Torbay share an Accommodation officer, a Personality Disorder Lead and a Carers support team

This team works closely with primary care services and other agencies within the locality and consist of two Band s 7 Clinical Team leader and a Practice Lead who are responsible for the Pan South Devon function of the MHAT team and several Band 6 Senior Mental Health Practitioners. In the Torbay area the MHAT team has 5.8 WTE Band 6. This team is responsible for triaging referrals to the locality; sign posting patients to adequate services, undertaking assessments and determining care pathway within our Secondary Mental Health Service.
