Background:

We are working with our partner in Devon to locate a consultant of Psychiatry to take up an exciting new role in a planned Inpatient and Urgent care ward in the General Hospital and planned to open summer 2022. This is a new post created by the development of a new purpose built, 16-bed, mixed gender acute mental health ward for those of working age.

The trust works with its partners to provide supported accommodation, vocational rehabilitation and employment opportunities to help people learn skills, get back to work and move towards living independently.

We provide a wide range of mental health and learning disability services, including those for:

  • Adults with mental health needs
  • Older people with mental health needs, including the Bristol Dementia Wellbeing Service
  • People with a learning disability
  • Children and young people with mental health and learning disability needs (from 1 April 2019)
  • People who need a secure environment.

The vast majority of our services are provided in the community, but we also have a range of inpatient (hospital) services for people who need a spell of more intensive care and support.

Salary

£84,559 – £114,003 dependant on experience and qualification. The trust has suggested that is open to specialist areas of interest that could help to supplement this.

Location

Torquay is a beautiful seaside town in Devon, known for beaches cliffs and coastline it has been nicknamed the English Riviera due to its remarkably warm climate with a record temperature of 31.5C.  Home to one of Britain’s most important stone age sites, the birthplace of Agatha Christie  and currently the home of a number of film companies.  Given that it has been a tourist town for long there are some excellent restaurants and bars. Torquay has good transport links, with a train a train to London clocking in at around 3 hours.

Essential Requirements:

  • Full and Specialist Registration with GMC
  • CCT or equivalent
  • Teaching experience of undergraduates
  • Evidence of ability to exercise leadership in a multi-disciplinary team.

Your Role

The job plan is currently made up of 10Pas over 5 days. 7,5 for DDC and 2.5 for SPA as per Royal College guidelines. Timetables are only indicative; the formal plan is to be agreed between the Medical Director and the applicant. For a copy of the timetable get in touch and we will be happy to provide it.

The post  will be in a new purpose built acute mental health ward for working age adults in Torbay.

The post holder will be in an exciting position of supporting the development of this ward and establishing the team.The post sits within Urgent and Inpatient Care in the South Devon and Torbay Local Delivery Unit (LDU). 

The post holder will be based at the South Devon and Torbay Mental Health Centre where private office space with PC accessibility and IT support is available and appropriate secretarial support will be provided.

The post holder will offer assessment, diagnosis and treatment of informal and detained patients admitted to the inpatient service, discharge RC responsibilities for those detained patients, provide senior clinical leadership to the inpatient team and be prepared to work across inpatient and Home Treatment Services to work towards maximising availability of inpatient beds to those in need and working with the local teams to manage the entire urgent and inpatient care pathway for the locality.

The sister ward to the ward you will be in  is co-located and both wards sit within the South Devon and Torbay Mental Health Centre within the Torbay General Hospital site which incorporates an older adult inpatient ward, outpatient services, Health Based Place of Safety, Home Treatment Team base.
