The excellence of physio tech

Physiotherapy technicians and assistants provide physical therapy treatments to patients for multiple circumstances where they’re impacted by functional movement, caused by injury and disease.

Here we are in 2022 and there are tons of exciting physio tech companies that are using AI and machine learning applications to help with mobility and organizing rehabilitation plans. It is one of the forefronts of the technology boom that has swept all over the US and the talented individuals behind the scenes are continuing to innovate and adapt, to provide the best care possible for those who need it.

Let’s discuss a few of the company’s developing solutions as we speak.

Rehabwheel

First, we head to the steep hills of San Francisco, where medical device company Rehabwheel is creating pedal exercise devices that attach to the wheelchair to treat spinal and musculoskeletal diseases. “A recent analysis of Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2019 data showed that approximately 1.71 billion people globally live with musculoskeletal conditions, including low back pain, neck pain, fractures, other injuries, osteoarthritis, amputation and rheumatoid arthritis” – WHO.

The wheelchair is one of the most common pieces of equipment used for those for suffer from these types of injuries and diseases. So, Rehabwheel’s Legmaker device is changing the game, offering its users a chance to exercise whether they see fit. It stimulates muscle impulses and blood flow in the lower limbs.

There are many benefits to using their device, as it’s designed for active and passive training by the movement of the lower limbs of a person and installation only takes around 5-10 minutes.

BetterPT

Formed in 2017, the agenda for BetterPT has been to create seamless systems for booking and managing appointments for patients and providers. Their intuitive technology allows users to create appointments and accept both in-person and telehealth appointment requests at any time of the day. Furthermore, centralized profile management has been perfectly streamlined, meaning people’s time can be saved.

Their appointment system can be accessed 24/7. Not to mention, configurable with the qualifying questions most relevant for your patients so things can flow with ease and less of a burden on the staff.

It’s filled to the brim with exciting features that just make it a cut above the rest including appointment reminders, text messages that allow for confirmation/rescheduling of appointments, and also analytics catered towards patient demographic and measuring digital performance.

Augment Therapy

Augment Therapy certainly have one foot firmly set in the future with their innovation, as they’re using augmented reality-produced exercise systems to help with physio, mainly specializing in helping young children who have sustained injuries.

The founder Lindsay Watson saw a gap in the market for resources and treatment for children, so she decided to make a platform that is effective as it is entertaining for patients. It includes over 40 exercises and games for OT, PT, Speech Therapy, and Objective Data Collection, so you can automatically track data points through motion capture technology on your smartphone or tablet.

Their core values are to provide solutions for children to live a healthy life, as the foundation for the future of all of us, and their innovation is led by clinicians to tackle the problems of the industry. There are also unlimited sessions across inpatient, outpatient, telehealth, and remote therapeutic monitoring.

Kaia Health

Kaia specializes in digital therapy apps for back pain and COPD, giving suitable therapy for their chronic diseases. They have over 475,000 users and want to push for affordable and effective treatment.

The company was founded by Konstantin Mehl and Manuel Thurner, as the duo personally suffered from chronic back pain, and following that, came the solution in the form of multimodal therapy. They knew that the time and money that entailed was extensive, so that’s why the aim and goal of this app were to be accessible to everyone and available anywhere!

Kaia is forward-thinking because it is a cocktail of movement, relaxation, and knowledge content all stirred together into a holistic therapy program. All of this is with the power of artificial intelligence, as their movement coach allows for helpful support tailored towards your needs.

Embodia

Another one can be accessed from the comfort of your own home and the aim is for powering clinicians with the tools to deliver data-driven care that improves patient outcomes. The founders wanted an application that would educate and engage patients to lead them on the road to recovery.

The Embodia app contains a library of 2000+ high-definition exercise videos for consumption and patients can monitor their progress, outcomes, and adherence between sessions. It allows physiotherapists to record their patients in session.

Communication within the application is very intuitive, as you can quickly write back to patient comments, share words of encouragement, and two-way messages. The whole goal for this was to reduce administrative work and be able to focus on caseloads. Whilst most practices might need multiple platforms to run, Embodia wants to put all these into one application to rule them all. According to its users, successfully too!
